This is how it started. Originally, there were ten students from Shanghai American School, and each had a chair. But then, the chairs were removed. Then to make it really challenging, we began adding students. We doubled the number of students. Then doubled it. Then doubled it again. Soon, the circle was comprised of 100 high school students, all supporting each other.
The result of this self-sustaining formation is not simply to develop really strong thigh muscles. (Though it managed to do that too.) Rather, it’s to help our students develop an understanding and appreciation for their ability to rely on each other.
The exercise is part of a unique advisory approach at the high school of SAS’ Pudong campus – a student-centric program that helps each of our 425 students transition through their high school years. In the program, each grade level has a Head of Year as well as multiple faculty advisors. These leaders help establish small, family-like group communities at each grade level to deepen their connections with students and help students address their vulnerabilities and doubts, and to develop their strengths.
Weekly advisory meetings vary from grade to grade, covering topics such as time management, stress and anxiety reduction strategies, organization, college and major selection reflection, substance abuse, romance, responsible digital citizenship, and even how to cook for yourself and do your laundry once you move away from home. (Just when the students thought the circle exercise was challenging…)
Said Andrew Krumland, Head of Year 10, “School nowadays can be a high-pressured environment, and kids need a place to talk. We needed to develop the space for our kids to be heard and supported.”
Even if that space is a circle, with no chairs.
